Ash Wednesday & the Season of Lent

All are welcome for tomorrow's Ash Wednesday Swedish pancake supper, followed by worship with imposition of ashes. Worship will be livestreamed at this worship link. If you are worshiping at home, we encourage you to mark your forehead with the sign of the cross during the imposition of ashes.You can follow along with the 7pm service bulletin here.

5:30pm: Worship for Families with Preschool Children
6pm: Swedish Pancake Supper
7pm: Ash Wednesday worship with imposition of ashes

Ash Wednesday is the official beginning of the Church season of Lent, 40 days of spiritual renewal culminating in the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ. Ashes are a symbol dating back to far before the time of Jesus. Adults and families have found the ashes to be a meaningful ritual to share with one another. Do not think it is too frightening for children - through this gathering, children are drawn more powerfully to the joy and promises of Jesus.

Devotional booklets: Special daily devotions for Lent are available on the back table. There are booklets and/or activities for 1) adults, 2) families with older children, and 3) families with preschool children.
Purple: Our color for the season is purple, the solemn color of the robe that was placed on Christ before his crucifixion, and the color of royalty, in honor of Christ's reigning over his kingdom of love and justice. Wear purple if you can in the coming weeks.

Should I Be Fasting?

Many Christians follow the example of Jesus by fasting in these 40 days. Fasting is the “voluntary denial of an otherwise normal function for the sake of intense spiritual activity.” Consider periods of fasting from TV, computer, phone, social media, plastic, anything disposable, reading the news, etc. Or rather than giving something up for Lent, look for an activity you can add that will honor Christ and share Christ’s love with others: volunteering, donating, phone-calling, card-writing, praying, meditating, Scripture-reading, etc. Call Pastor Tom if you need ideas.

Holy Communion

We share Holy Communion on the 1st and 3rd Sundays, sharing the meal initiated by Jesus on the night before his death. It is for all who want to follow him and be a part of the movement he started. All are welcome.
